General Information
As well as accessing palliative care, there are many ways to secure your comfort and rights at end-of-life, including making use of the new options provided by recently enacted laws:
- appointing a Medical Treatment Decision Maker (MTDM) using Advance Care Planning
- appointing an Enduring Power of Attorney (PoA)
- writing an Advance Care Directive (ACD)
- accessing Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) – see here and here.
Support from DWDV
DWDV is able to provide you with support in the following ways:
- Request a volunteer to act as a Witness or Contact Person, as defined in the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017.
- Find out about end-of-life options on our website or by contacting us
- Get help to navigate voluntary assisted dying services
- Connect to end-of-life counselling – contact us for more information
- DWDV may be able to arrange transport to your doctor/hospital if you are unable to do so yourself and if you live near Melbourne. If this is a service you wish to enquire about, please contact our office.
- Report problems or barriers to having your end-of-life rights respected
- Request a speaker to provide an information session to your club or group
Also DWDV ...
- monitors how the new end-of-life laws are working in practice
- assists other states and territories achieve voluntary assisted dying legislation
- works to ensure that voluntary assisted dying regulations are practical
- works with other organisations to cooperatively achieve our purpose.
DWDV provides referral to counselling but does not assist people to end their lives.
